Before you lear tutorial about graphic design, you should understand many terms in the graphic design field. This is the terms you must be familiar with.

1. Raster and Vector

After learning graphic design, you might hear about raster or bitmap. Raster or bitmap is an image formed from a group of pixel or notch to be a colour or shape. Actually, the raster is a photo. Photoshop and GIMP are programs that most used in photo and raster editing. By using the program, you can convert the color and pixel of the picture. A photo contains many pixels. So, changing the size is difficult. For example, changing the resolution of a small photo to the bigger one can affect its quality or make it blur.

In a vector, there are 2 coordinate points, X and Y. A group of point unity to shape and you can fill it with colour. If you want to change the vector size, you don’t have to worry about its quality. For instance, you want to change size in a vector software like Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, and Inkscape.

A vector image is different to the photo which is simpler and its size can be processed by graphics software without any difficulty.

2. DPI and PPI

Resolution in graphic design can be divided into two, DPI and PPI. When you create or change an image for printing, you have to check its DPI. DPI stands for dot per inch, the amount point per inch in every page to print. More high the dot-per-inch amount, the picture quality is better. The standard amount to DPI for printing is 300 DPI.

3. Typography

Typography is a feature to arrange a letter. In graphic design, typography is a basic knowledge to understand. As a designer, you have to know the kind of fonts like Serif and Sans-Serif, able to set the kerning and know the font size.

4. Grid

Grid is a chess formed table contains a vertical and horizontal line to makes user can arrange the picture or make a design plan easy. The grid also has the function to set the composition and balance between image and letter.

5. Logo VS Brand

The logo is a graphic design art which has esthetic shape and represents a company identity. For a designer, the logo can also give satisfaction and happiness. The good logo is a logo can make client interest and easy to remember.
